MINISTER ACCEPTS CHILDREN'S ADVOCATE'S REPORT

Released on April 12, 2000

Social Services Minister Harry Van Mulligen today committed the government to

improving services for children and youth in care, in response to the

Children's Advocate's Report.

"Over the past 15 years, we have consistently improved the services we provide

to foster children and their families as a result of independent reports such

as this," Van Mulligen said. "On behalf of the government, I want to thank the

Advocate, review panel and all those who participated in this report for their

work and insight. This will be a valuable tool in helping us to improve the

system.

This report is the latest in a series of external reports the department has

received which has resulted in improvements to the child welfare system, dating

back to 1987. The government commissioned this report from the Child Advocate

in 1998, as part of its on-going efforts to improve foster care in Saskatchewan.

"The advocate noted there are no quick fixes for improving the system," Van

Mulligen stated. "We expect, after further review and analysis, that the

actions we take in responding to the report will occur over the next several

years."

The minister released a formal statement in response to the report, outlining

achievements since the 1987 Ombudsman's Report on Foster Care, which among

other improvements recommended that the government appoint a full-time

Children's Advocate.
