TEN MILLION FOR PROVINCIAL INFRASTRUCTURE

Released on April 11, 2000

Financial support for rural, urban and northern communities has been renewed in

the 2000/2001 Provincial Budget through an injection of $10 million for the

Provincial Municipal Infrastructure Program.

The funding represents the continued commitment of the provincial government to

ensure our communities are able to maintain existing sewer, water and road

systems as well as support infrastructure development.

Northern infrastructure is a priority with $500,000 of the infrastructure

funding being set aside for immediate water and sewer needs. Urban

municipalities will be able to access $7.5 million and rural municipalities $2

million from the Provincial Municipal Infrastructure Program.

Last year, with municipal contributions to this program, more than $26 million

was made available that made nearly 100 infrastructure projects possible in

Saskatchewan.

"We will continue to negotiate with the federal government to ensure that the

national program, beginning in 2001, places a priority on those projects that

will maximize the funds available," Municipal Affairs, Culture and Housing

Minister Clay Serby said.
