INCREASED FUNDING FOR NORTHERN COMMUNITY SCHOOLS

Released on April 10, 2000

The ten community schools in Northern Saskatchewan will have more resources to

provide students with an education that reflects their histories, experiences

and learning needs, thanks to a funding boost in this year's Provincial Budget.

Community Schools in La Ronge, Cumberland House, Sandy Bay, La Loche,

Pinehouse, Buffalo Narrows, Beauval, Creighton and Ile-a-la-Crosse will benefit.

This increase of $400,000 brings funding of the Northern Community Schools

Program to a total of $980,000.

"We have had much success with our award-winning community schools. Our

government is committed to recognizing the needs of northern students through

this comprehensive and holistic approach," Education Minister Jim Melenchuk

said.

"The program has brought schools and communities closer together which has been

beneficial for both," Northern Affairs Minister Keith Goulet said. "It has

generated many activities that have been valuable for both students and their

communities."

Northern school divisions are also receiving $216,000 in annual project funding

through the Indian and Métis Education Development Program (IMED). The IMED

program provides incentive grants to school divisions to develop, implement and

maintain Indian and Métis educational programming.

"Our government believes strongly in working with our northern school divisions

in the development of programs that reflect the educational needs of the north,

"Melenchuk said.
