NEW MEMBERS APPOINTED TO REGINA DISTRICT HEALTH BOARD

Released on April 6, 2000

A key step in implementing recommendations of the external review of Regina

Health District was taken today when Health Minister Pat Atkinson filled three

vacant positions on the Regina District Health Board.

The new board members are Ray Boughen, Mayor of Moose Jaw, Lloyd Boutilier, a

Regina financial consultant and Ken Hutchinson, a human resource consultant

from Fort Qu'Appelle.

"These individuals will bring key skills to the board to assist them in meeting

the challenges ahead," Atkinson said.

In releasing the report of the review of the Regina Health District on March 2,

2000, Atkinson indicated that she would fill board vacancies with individuals

with strong business skills and experience in human resource management.

Atkinson called for a review of the Regina Health District October 29, 1999, in

response to the district's growing deficit. The review report released March

2, 2000, outlined recommendations to permit the district to provide needed

services while moving toward a balanced budget.

In follow up to the review, a number of steps have been taken:

To assist the district in managing debt, $24 million in additional

capital funding was provided.

Bert Boyd was appointed as special advisor to support the district in

preparing a three year financial recovery plan.

In the 2000-01 budget, the district received base funding of $306.4

million, an increase of 5.1 per cent.

In the 2000-01 budget, funding of $10.8 million from the Health

Transition Fund was provided for specialized programs and new equipment.

The district is engaged in consultations with staff and public to

assist them in preparing their 2000-01 health plan, to be submitted for

approval May 15, 2000.
