NEW SCHOOLS IN SASKATOON

Released on April 5, 2000

Students in Saskatoon's Silverspring community have much to celebrate today.

The provincial government has approved construction of two new schools in

Saskatoon's northeast.

"The Silverspring community is vibrant and growing. The Saskatoon Public

School Division, St. Paul's Roman Catholic Separate School Division, community

members and the provincial government all recognize the importance of these new

schools for students in this area," Education Minister Jim Melenchuk said.

Saskatchewan Education will provide $100,000 for initial planning and design

work which will begin immediately.

Saskatchewan Education and the school divisions will share the cost of the two

new schools, estimated to be $11 million. The schools will provide space for

more than 600 students, from kindergarten to grade eight. Students are

currently being bused to a number of schools outside of the Silverspring

community.

"These projects demonstrate the government's commitment to work with school

divisions to provide students with comfortable and well-equipped learning

facilities. This announcement takes us one step closer to achieving our goal

of addressing our highest-priority school construction projects," Melenchuk

said.

This announcement is the first in a series of major capital funding projects.

The Provincial Budget contains $29.2 million in financial support for school

capital projects. This includes $5 million from the government's new Centenary

Capital Fund.
