MORE NURSING EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES

Released on April 5, 2000

New funding from the provincial government means more qualified nurses will be

getting into the workplace in the future.

Saskatchewan Post-Secondary Education and Skills Training is adding $2.85

million to nursing education initiatives to support the training of an

additional 80 nurses a year, bringing the total to 260 annually. The new

funding includes $1.9 million for operating expenses and just under $1 million

for renovations and upgraded facilities. The training will be done by SIAST

and the University of Saskatchewan in both Saskatoon and Regina.

"We are committed to addressing the long-term need for nurses in Saskatchewan,"

Post Secondary Education and Skills Training Minister Glenn Hagel said. "The

recent Provincial Budget shows that the government is serious about training

nurses to work in Saskatchewan."

This funding supports the nursing degree program recently announced by Health

Minister Pat Atkinson and Minister Hagel. The program was developed in

consultation with nursing institutions and the Saskatchewan Registered Nurses'

Association (SRNA).
