HIGHWAY LINK TO UNITED STATES UNDER CONSTRUCTION

Released on October 5, 1999

A provincial highway link to the United States is receiving a facelift this

fall, with the finishing touches to be applied next spring.

Nearly 12 km of Highway 35 south of Weyburn, from the junction of Highway 18 to

Tribune, is being reconstructed to improve and strengthen the highway.

"This is an important highway for motorists in southern Saskatchewan - from

grain and oilfield traffic to tourists and local traffic," Highways and

Transportation Minister Maynard Sonntag said. "Last year, more than 16 km of

Highway 35 north of Tribune was improved."

A layer of sand and crushed gravel is being applied to Highway 35 to strengthen

the roadway and a seal coat is being applied to the surface to prevent moisture

entering the roadway. Next spring, a second seal coat will be applied.

The total cost of the project is $1.4 million with the contract awarded to

Warner Construction Co. Ltd as the lowest of seven bidders. The work is

expected to wrap up at the end of October. The final phase will commence in

June 2000. An estimated 45 jobs are being used in completing this work.
