QUINT DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION RECEIVES NEIGHBOURHOOD DEVELOPMENT ORGANIZATION FUNDING

Released on May 20, 1999

Economic and Co-operative Development Minister Janice MacKinnon today

announced funding of $45,000 to Saskatoon's Quint Development

Corporation to co-ordinate business, social development and job

creation activities for the benefit of inner-city residents under the

province's Neighbourhood Development Organization (NDO) initiative.

"Quint Development Corporation is doing an excellent job in mobilizing

inner-city resources and delivering grassroots' business and

community services in Saskatoon," MacKinnon said. "NDOs such as Quint

are an important part of building stronger and more prosperous

communities and at the same time creating jobs for Saskatchewan

people."

The funding to Quint represents the first installment of $150,000 in

operational funding it will receive from the government during the

1999-2000 fiscal year. The corporation has been operating for four

years in five inner-city neighbourhoods in Saskatoon.

Quint's activities have included: operation of a Small Business Loans

Association; a new micro-loan and entrepreneurial training initiative;

development of a hostel for northern residents visiting family members

in hospital; development of several housing co-operatives under the

Neighbourhood Home Ownership Program; and development of a

construction co-operative to provide trades training and work to local

residents.

"With this support, our communities will be able to develop

meaningful solutions to revitalizing and stabilizing our

neighbourhoods," Quint Board of Directors Chairperson Norma

Bovill said. "Quint has proven that, by working in partnership

with residents, community groups, business and various levels of

government, we have made a difference. We look forward to

working with other NDOs across the province."

Additional funding under this year's provincial budget has made a

total of $500,000 available to help NDOs develop community-based

programming. Saskatchewan's two other NDOs, Riverbank

Development Corporation in Prince Albert and Community Action

Alliance in Regina, will also receive core funding to develop

unique approaches to creating stronger local economies and

productive neighbourhoods.

"The NDO initiative is another example of government working with

communities to create opportunities for Saskatchewan people,"

MacKinnon added. "Together, we can ensure that Saskatchewan's

strong economic growth will benefit all members of our society."
