PROVINCE PROVIDING ADDITIONAL FUNDING FOR RAT CONTROL

Released on March 31, 1999

Agriculture and Food Minister Eric Upshall today said the provincial

government is providing additional funding to improve the rat control

problem in rural Saskatchewan.

The minister said an additional $200,000 will be provided in the

1999-2000 budget to assist local Agriculture Development and

Diversification (ADD) boards in handling the problem.

"Rats are a serious health problem and contaminate livestock feed and

grain and cause damage to building insulation," Upshall said. "The

decision to increase pest control funding was made following extensive

consultations including the Saskatchewan Association of Rural

Municipalities, ADD boards and the Saskatchewan Pest Control Officers

Association."

"The additional funding will enable the ADD boards to improve the

effectiveness of pest control in the province," said Alex Mitchell,

chair of the Provincial Council of ADD boards.

The provincial government now provides an annual grant of $530,000 to

the ADD boards for pest control activities. Participating rural

municipalities also contribute to the program.
