UPSHALL PROCLAIMS SASKATCHEWAN ORCHID WEEK

Released on March 29, 1999

Agriculture and Food Minister Eric Upshall today announced that the

week of April 5-11 has been proclaimed Saskatchewan Orchid Week to

recognize that orchids are a diversification opportunity for

Saskatchewan greenhouse growers.

The week is observed in conjunction with the Regina Orchid Society's

annual show and sale, April 10-11 which annually attracts Western

Canadian orchid enthusiasts to Regina.

"While one may associate orchids with tropical climates far from

Saskatchewan, there are 21 species of orchids that are native to this

province," Upshall said. "And it's not necessary to have a

climatically controlled greenhouse to grow some species of orchids in

the home many can be grown right on the windowsill, just like any

other houseplant."

One member of the Regina Orchid Society has designed equipment to

assist the growth of orchids and has applied for patents on the

invention.

"As well, a few of Saskatchewan's orchid enthusiasts also sell their

product to florists when there is high demand and low supply of

imported orchids."

Saskatchewan's two orchid societies, the Regina Orchid Society

and the Saskatchewan Orchid Society based in Saskatoon, are

composed of about 150 members in total.
