NEW FUND ENHANCES EQUIPMENT AND ENSURES HEALTH SYSTEM READINESS FOR YEAR 2000

Released on March 26, 1999

Associate Minister of Health Judy Junor today announced health

districts will benefit from $50 million to enhance equipment and

ensure continued smooth operation of vital health services for

Saskatchewan residents into the Year 2000.

The Millennium Fund for Medical Equipment and Technology is part of

the 1999-2000 provincial budget announced today. Every district will

receive some funding, based on their technological need.

"Ensuring that essential health services are available across the

province on and beyond January 1, 2000 is a top priority," Junor said.

"This $50 million fund will enhance the operation of the health

districts with new equipment that answers Year 2000 requirements."

Junor said Saskatchewan Health has worked closely with health

districts to assess the Year 2000 issue and to develop solutions.

This partnership has also included identifying and checking equipment

in all health districts for possible Y2K problems. There are three

main areas of assessment:

biomedical devices, such as fetal heart monitors and

defibrillators;

health facilities (i.e. heating, electrical); and

information systems (i.e. computers).

Junor said districts routinely replace and upgrade equipment and

systems to improve efficiency and service to residents. The new

fund recognizes districts have accelerated this work to work

toward trouble-free health service entering the new millennium.

"Our plans to have the health system ready for the Year 2000 are

on track," Junor said. "The Millennium Fund for Medical

Equipment and Technology will ensure districts have the resources

to meet the most pressing needs for essential health services."
