MUNICIPAL RCMP POLICING COSTS RESTRUCTURING ASSISTANCE INCREASED

Released on March 26, 1999

Municipal Affairs, Culture and Housing Minister Carol Teichrob today

announced that $4.1 million is available in 1999-2000 for the Policing

Cost Restructuring Assistance Program. The new figures reflect a

significant increase over the $1 million spent last year for the three

months the program was in effect. This program assists rural and

urban municipalities with populations of less than 500 to adjust to

new costs for RCMP policing.

"The Policing Cost Restructuring Assistance Program recognizes that

rural and smaller urban municipalities did not pay for policing

services until 1999," Teichrob said. "This assistance is provided to

help them adjust to the new policing cost distribution formula."

A policing grant of $15 per capita for rural municipalities and small

urban municipalities with no RCMP detachment and $30 per capita for

small urban municipalities with an RCMP detachment was announced last

year and came into effect January 1, 1999. The grant provides a base

level of support which is intended to be applied towards new policing

costs.

"This program recognizes that some municipalities have never been

responsible for policing costs in the past and this assistance will

help them to adjust their budgets accordingly," Teichrob said.
