Health Minister Pat Atkinson today said citizens in the north willreceive improved health services through new funding in the 1999-2000
budget that provides for increased front-line staffing and improved
emergency response.
"The two northern districts, Keewatin Yathe and Mamaweetin Churchill
River and the Athabasca Health Authority will receive a total of
$20.2 million to support services for northern residents," Atkinson
said.
New funding totalling $500,000 will go toward improvements in
emergency and air ambulance services, mental health and public health
programs. "Northern families can feel more confident in a medical
emergency, more confident in their health system," Atkinson said.
Atkinson said there will be additional funding for health providers
who offer key prevention and support services to the north. "We will
add staff positions so northern residents can get faster access to the
services they need."
As well, the Northern Telehealth Project will become fully
operational, linking health providers in northern communities to
specialists in major urban centres. This project involves eight sites
in six health districts. It uses videoconferencing to allow for
services including obstetrical, orthopedic and trauma consultations
with specialists in Prince Albert and Saskatoon.
Northern citizens also will see progress in the planning and
construction of new hospitals in Meadow Lake, La Loche and Stoney
Rapids. These facilities will complement the services offered
through the new hospital opened in La Ronge in 1996.
The two northern district health boards and the Athabasca Health
Authority were established in 1997 and began operating in 1998.
Atkinson said the new organizations have made excellent progress
in assessing the needs of northern residents and planning for the
improved delivery of services.
"The budget will support the new boards in their efforts to work
with communities and develop appropriate health services in this
unique environment," she said.
