COLLEGE OF MEDICINE FUNDING STRENGTHENED

Released on March 26, 1999

Health Minister Pat Atkinson today announced funding to the College of

Medicine totalling $20.6 million in the 1999-2000 budget to ensure the

college has sufficient faculty and programming resources to continue

its training, retraining and placement programs for physicians in

Saskatchewan.

The funding includes an increase of $2.9 million for college

operations.

The funding increase fulfils a key recommendation in Dr. Tom

Noseworthy's report, Blueprint for Change', regarding changes needed

to strengthen the college's role in the province's health system. The

Noseworthy report was released January 13, 1999.

"Dr. Noseworthy's review of the College of Medicine pointed out a need

for increased funding to keep it strong and relevant in the vigorous

environment of health care in Saskatchewan," Atkinson said. "The

College of Medicine plays a vital role in helping recruit and retain

physicians throughout our province and they have been given the funds

that will allow them to fulfil this crucial mandate."

The funds will ensure competitive faculty compensation and will allow

for equity within the college.

The College of Medicine is continuing to develop programs, curriculum

and policies to support the recruitment and retention of its

graduates within the province. Seventy per cent of family

medicine practitioners from the most recent graduating class are

practising in Saskatchewan, up from 52 per cent in the previous

year.
