BUDGET INVESTS IN SASKATCHEWAN'S CULTURAL INDUSTRIES

Released on March 26, 1999

Municipal Affairs, Culture and Housing Minister Carol Teichrob

announced that the province is investing $200,000 in 1999-2000 in a

Cultural Industries Development Fund. The investment will strengthen

production capacity, encourage the development of culturally

significant work and support increased self-reliance for the

industries.

"Saskatchewan's cultural industries represent a significant and

growing part of the province's economy and the sector makes a valuable

contribution to the cultural health and well-being of the province,"

Teichrob said. "Cultural industries have much to offer Saskatchewan

in terms of economic development and job creation."

Last year the province supported the introduction of a tax credit for

the film and video industry and established annual funding for

SaskFilm. This additional $200,000 investment in cultural industries

is primarily intended to address financial priorities in other

segments of the sector which include sound recording, book publishing

and visual arts and crafts.

Department officials will be meeting with representatives of the

Cultural Industries Association to determine the most effective method

of distributing the funds.
