Agriculture and Food Minister Eric Upshall today announced that theprovince will increase its investment by $3.5 million in agricultural
research and development to continue to build the agriculture
production base and to pursue value-added processing of agriculture
products.
"We are investing a total of $17 million to support research for the
development of new agriculture technology and to facilitate
diversification and value-added opportunities in the agri-food
industry," Upshall said.
"Research and development means the Saskatchewan industry can be on
the forefront of the latest technologies and will help the province
maintain its position as a leading centre of agricultural research."
Upshall said research and technology adoption is vital to diversifying
and adding value to Saskatchewan products and to creating new jobs.
"Research and development is the foundation for new production and
value-added opportunities, lower costs of production, economic growth
and more jobs in Saskatchewan."
Through efforts of the research community and support from
industry groups, research and development funding has contributed
to a strong specialty crops industry that makes Saskatchewan the
largest exporter of green lentils, tame mustard and canary seed.
The acreage of crops such as caraway, wild rice, coriander and
chickpeas has approximately doubled in the last five years.
Likewise, research and development partnerships have resulted in
the major changes in seeding and tillage practice that have
enabled farmers to reduce risk from weather and reduce fuel costs
while improving their soil.
From 1993-98, $87 million in funding has been provided, including
Saskatchewan Agriculture and Food's contribution by the Agri-Food
Innovation Fund. Some of the investment areas that have been,
and will continue to be, funded include agricultural
biotechnology, food processing, specialty crops, livestock and
specialized livestock, forages, herbs and spices, horticulture,
soils, machinery development and crop processing.
The additional funding will be delivered through existing
programs within Saskatchewan Agriculture and Food including the
Agriculture Development Fund and Technology Adoption and
Demonstration expenditures.
