BUDGET CONTINUES COMMITMENT TO SAFE COMMUNITIES

Released on March 26, 1999

Justice Minister John Nilson said today that a $17 million increase in

the Justice budget is an investment to ensure that we continue to keep

our communities safe.

"Keeping communities safe is a top priority of this government and

this investment will enable us to continue to hold all offenders

accountable for their crimes and deal clearly and directly with youth

crime," Nilson said.

Highlights of the Justice budget for 1999-2000 include:

$635,000 in funding to police to support the Serious and Habitual

Youth Offender Comprehensive Action Plan (SHOCAP), to deal

effectively with violent and repeat youth offenders;

$750,000 in funding to police-based serious crime units in Regina

and Saskatoon to attack organized crime throughout the province;

$11.5 million in increased funding for court and correctional

facilities; and

$1 million increased investment in the RCMP to maintain policing

in rural Saskatchewan.

"Our increased investment in Justice will also allow us to continue to

work in partnership with communities, families and individuals to

foster safe, healthy communities throughout the province," Nilson

said.
