NEW TECHNOLOGY ALLOWS DISTANCE EDUCATION

Released on March 9, 1999

Associate Minister of Health Judy Junor today praised new technology

as an effective tool in helping health providers and other interested

individuals in remote locations improve their skills so they can offer

better health care to residents in the north and other remote areas.

Minister Junor said distance education workshops over the past year

have reached more than 1,200 individuals who might not have been able

to participate in specialized discussions and training sessions

without the live satellite telecasts organized by Saskatchewan Health.

A distance education workshop on tobacco reduction will be telecast

Wednesday, March 10 from Saskatoon to 38 sites across the province on

Saskatchewan Communications Network (SCN). The workshop is expected

to attract about 400 registrants.

"Traditionally, giving residents in these areas access to specialized

training is very difficult and costly," Junor said. "Modern

technology has brought people together."

Wednesday's workshop also will be available through Health Canada for

satellite telecast to groups across Canada.

Minister Junor said Saskatchewan Health can attract

internationally recognized authorities on workshop topics because

the workshops give speakers an opportunity to speak to large

audiences facing diverse health issues.

She stressed these workshops are excellent examples of

co-operative partnerships where government, community

organizations and health districts work together for the good of

the citizens of our province.

Wednesday's workshop is hosted by Saskatchewan Health, in

co-operation with Health Canada, Saskatchewan Education, the

Saskatchewan Interagency Council on Smoking and Health and

representative health districts.
