LEGISLATURE TO BE RECALLED ON MARCH 15, 1999

Released on March 3, 1999

Saskatchewan's Legislature will be recalled for its spring 1999

sitting on Monday, March 15th, Premier Roy Romanow announced today.

"We're looking forward to a lively session, as always," Romanow said.

"For the government's part, we're going to focus on the people's

business and the people's priorities: health care, education, economic

development and safe communities."

The government will table its 1999-2000 budget on Friday, March 26th.

"The hallmark of our government has been the return to balance and

common sense," Romanow said.

"Balance and common sense will continue to be reflected in the

provincial budget.

"Our commitment to the people of Saskatchewan is to invest budget

surpluses into better services, lower taxes and less government debt

as and when we can afford it.

"We are reviewing the impact of the recent federal budget and other

issues. In the days and weeks to come, we'll be making some final

decisions about what our province can afford to do this year."

Premier Romanow said that a key priority the people of

Saskatchewan can count on is a significant re-investment in

health care.

"Our health system got a significant shot in the arm this year,"

he said. "The federal government has made some $75 million

available for health and every dime of that money is going to be

invested into better health services. Saskatchewan will be

making a substantial contribution from provincial revenues.

"Our priorities for that reinvestment are clear: shorter wait

times for care; better cancer care; better women's health care;

and fair, improved working conditions for health providers."

Romanow said that Saskatchewan's farm producers can also count on

a $140 million provincial investment by the province into farm

support. Finance Minister Eric Cline announced the details of

how Saskatchewan is financing its share of the farm support

package earlier this week.

The premier said the government is planning a normal Legislative

session and intends to present approximately fifty pieces of

legislation.
