SPRING ROAD RESTRICTIONS IN EFFECT

Released on March 1, 1999

Highways and Transportation Minister Judy Bradley announced today that

spring road restrictions are now in effect on various provincial

highways and municipal roads across Saskatchewan.

"Spring road restrictions are in place to prevent damage by heavy

vehicle loads during the spring thaw," Bradley said. "That's why the

department and independent contractors haul a large portion of the

sand and gravel for next summer's busy construction season in the

winter."

Once placed, the spring load restrictions are generally in effect for

a six week period. The department and rural municipalities have the

ability to change these restrictions with 48 hours notice. This is

beneficial to the trucking industry as restrictions can be removed

temporarily when extended cold weather conditions occur during the

spring period.

The publication schedule for spring road restrictions has been

changed. Previously road restriction orders were published each

Monday, Wednesday and Friday; now orders will be published twice a

week on Tuesday and Friday during the road restriction season.

"The reduction in the number of orders will make it easier for the

trucking industry and rural municipalities to stay up-to-date on

changes," Bradley said. "It will also reduce costs to those users

that require paper copies of the orders."

Recorded road restriction information is available 24 hours a day

by calling any of the provincial Highway Hotline road information

numbers. Callers may select highway or rural municipality

restrictions from the recorded menu and then select the

appropriate number for the desired highway or municipality.

A dedicated fax polling station in Saskatoon at (306) 933-5673

can also be contacted. To use this service, you must have a fax

machine equipped with the polling function. When the number is

polled, the latest official spring road restriction information

is returned to the caller.

Interested parties may also subscribe to a broadcast fax service

through the Saskatchewan Trucking Association (STA). When the

road restriction orders are available, STA will send a broadcast

fax to all their subscribers. Application forms to use this

service are available by calling the STA at (306) 569-9696.

A detailed spring road restriction bulletin explaining the

procedure to be included in road restriction orders has been

mailed to rural municipalities across the province.

"Spring road restriction placement is an important part of

maintaining our highways and roads in the critical spring thaw

period," Bradley said.
