GRADING AND PAVING PROJECT AWARDED ON HIGHWAY 31

Released on June 3, 1999

Highways and Transportation Minister Judy Bradley today announced a

16.2 km grading and sealed granular paving project on Highway 31 from

west of Denzil to east of Macklin.

"Highway 31 was targeted by the West Central Municipal Government

Committee as a highway in need of immediate improvements," Bradley

said. "This project demonstrates the area transportation planning

committees are influencing road work to determine local priorities

that meet social and economic needs."

Kelly Panteluk Construction Ltd. was awarded the contract for the

grading and paving project as the lowest of seven bidders. To provide

an acceptable new road surface width, crews will be making the lanes

and shoulders wider to meet acceptable design standards. An asphalt

seal coat will also be applied to the new granular surface to provide

a waterproof, non-skid, anti-glare surface that protects the road bed

from deteriorating, extending the life of the highway.

"This $4.6 million project will begin in early June and is planned for

completion in late October, 1999," Bradley said. "An estimated 90

jobs will be used in completing the project."

The project will be done on Highway 31 from 6.9 km west of Denzil

to 1.6 km east of Macklin for a total distance of 16.2 km. The

$4.6 million project cost includes department-supplied materials

and services.

"The department budget increased by $15 million this year so our

construction season continues to get busier," Bradley said. "The

increased funding demonstrates our commitment to preserving our

investment in the Saskatchewan highway system."
