Ninety-six projects have been approved under the new Provincial-Municipal Infrastructure Program for an estimated value of $25.6million. The province has committed $10 million and urban and rural
municipalities have committed more than $15 million. The projects
will create almost 400 seasonal jobs in construction and related
industries.
"We have had overwhelming response to this program," Municipal
Affairs, Culture and Housing Minister Carol Teichrob said.
"Infrastructure is considered high priority by provincial municipal
associations and our government is pleased to make $10 million
available through the Provincial-Municipal Infrastructure Program to
help address the needs identified by their member municipalities."
Municipal Affairs, Culture and Housing, the Saskatchewan Urban
Municipalities Association, and the Saskatchewan Association of Rural
Municipalities jointly developed the criteria for project review and
evaluation. The program requires at least a matching contribution
from municipalities.
Approved provincial funding for individual projects in 51 rural
municipalities, 12 cities, 15 towns, and 15 villages ranges from
$2,300 to $1,846,300.
Road projects were a priority in rural municipalities, with
approvals for 46 road construction and upgrading projects, two
rural water supply projects, two joint water supply projects with
urban municipalities and one joint waste disposal project.
Priorities in urban municipalities included projects in water
supply, waste disposal and health, safety and environmental
concerns. Twenty-seven high priority water supply projects, nine
waste disposal projects and six transportation projects were
approved.
In northern Saskatchewan, six community water and sewer projects
have been approved with up to 12 more being approved once the
review of applications is completed.
