PREMIER ROMANOW APPOINTS NEW FINANCE DEPUTY MINISTER

Released on July 14, 1999

Premier Roy Romanow today appointed Paul Boothe as Deputy Minister of

Finance and Secretary to Treasury Board.

Boothe replaces William Davern Jones, who has accepted a new position

with SaskPower after having served as Deputy Minister of Finance for

the past four years.

Both appointments are effective August 16.

Boothe holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of British

Columbia. A professor in the Economics Department at the University

of Alberta for the past fifteen years, he has also provided consulting

and advisory services to the Bank of Canada, Alberta Treasury, the

federal Department of Finance and the Auditor General of Canada.

Since 1997, he has been Director of the Institute of Public Economics.

He has published material on tax reform, budgeting, debt management,

equalization and fiscal transfers.

"Boothe's past experience as an applied economist in the public and

private sectors will be of tremendous value in his leadership of our

public finance agenda," Romanow said. "He will continue our focus on

the province's tax reform initiative, working to ensure concerns of

Saskatchewan taxpayers are addressed in a timely manner.

"In addition, Boothe will oversee the government's ongoing

commitment to balancing the provincial budget while at the same

time providing ongoing, sustainable tax reductions, enhancements

to priority programs and paying down the provincial debt."

Romanow highly commended the efforts of Jones and wished him well

in his new position of Vice-President of Finance with SaskPower,

after 21 years of service with the department.

"Jones successfully led our continued effort to balance the

budget while at the same time reducing taxes and the provincial

debt and enhancing funding to priority program areas," Romanow

said.
