SASK WATER BUILDING WATER TREATMENT PLANT

Released on July 5, 1999

Maynard Sonntag, minister responsible for Sask Water, today announced

the provincial government will help finance a new $2.24 million water

treatment plant and distribution system for the Village of Pierceland.

"I am extremely pleased to announce that Sask Water will be building

and operating a $1.0 million water treatment plant for Pierceland,"

Sonntag said. "Construction will begin immediately and should be

complete by December 1999."

He also announced, on behalf of Municipal Affairs, Culture and Housing

Minister Carol Teichrob, that the province will invest $200,000

through the Provincial - Municipal Infrastructure Program to support

the village's initiative to develop a new distribution system which

Sask Water's treatment plant will serve. The village is also

investing $1.04 million in the distribution system.

"This is an example of the province's interest in working closely with

municipalities to respond to their needs for infrastructure

development," Sonntag said. "Until now, Pierceland residents have

been relying on shallow wells and sandpoints for drinking water and

dealing with constant quantity and quality problems. This new

distribution and treatment system will mean village residents will

finally enjoy an assured supply of high quality water."

The water treatment plant will use a conventional groundwater

treatment process which will reduce high concentrations of iron

and manganese common to the area. The water distribution system

will consist of approximately 10,000 metres of pipeline with

connections to 220 households.

"This will mean a definite improvement to the quality of life for

our residents including everything from better tasting water to

no more worries about too much iron causing rust stains on our

laundry," Pierceland Mayor Jim Krushelnitzky said.

The new treatment and distribution will serve the community for

at least 30 years.
