Highways and Transportation Minister Judy Bradley announced a$44.7 million 1998/99 Winter Tender Schedule. The 27 projects
involved include eight projects in western Saskatchewan.
Projects in your area include:
resurfacing 10 km of Highway 21 north of the South Saskatchewan
River to east of Eatonia;
pit run aggregate haul and stockpile on Highway 1 west of Gull
Lake to west of Tompkins;
resurfacing 7.8 km of Highway 21 north of Kindersley;
paving 13.5 km of Highway 1 west of Secretan and Junction 19
east;
paving 13.5 km of Highway 1 west of Gull Lake;
granular spot improvements on 9.2 km of Highway 19 north of
Chaplin;
paving 14 km of Highway 1 east of Tompkins to west of Tompkins;
and
13 km of granular spot improvements on Highway 4, 13, 32 & 332
south of Junction 43, west of Eastend and between Shackleton and
Lancer.
"These eight projects are part of a $44.7 million winter tendering
schedule that will mean the creation of about 1,100 seasonal jobs,"
Bradley said. "Winter tendering lets contractors better plan their
personnel and equipment requirements. Contractors can move equipment
to the project sites before the spring road bans take effect in March.
By hauling aggregate for paving projects during the winter we prevent
damage to the roads."
The winter tender schedule represents about 43 per cent of next
year's planned capital and preservation contract expenditures at
the 1998/99 budget level. The remainder of highway work to be
tendered will follow in spring after the provincial budget is
announced.
"We are working hard to improve highways across the province,"
Bradley said. "In the last two years we have added $60 million
to our department budget. We are meeting our commitment to spend
$2.5 billion improving our roads and highways by 2007."
