Released on January 27, 1999
Highways and Transportation Minister Judy Bradley recently announced a$44.7 million 1998/99 Winter Tender Schedule. The 27 projects
involved in the winter tender include three projects in southeastern
Saskatchewan.
Projects in your area include:
resurfacing 34.8 km of Highway 1 west of Moosomin;
resurfacing 6.6 km of Highway 5 east of Kamsack; and
resurfacing 9.7 km of Highway 49 west of Hyas.
"These three projects are part of a $44.7 million winter tendering
schedule that will mean the creation of about 1,100 seasonal jobs,"
Bradley said. "Winter tendering lets contractors better plan their
personnel and equipment requirements. Contractors can move equipment
to the project sites before the spring road bans take effect in March.
By hauling aggregate for paving projects during the winter we prevent
damage to the roads."
The winter tender schedule represents about 43 per cent of next year's
planned capital and preservation contract expenditures at the 1998/99
budget level. The remainder of highway work to be tendered will
follow in spring after the provincial budget is announced.
"We are working hard to improve highways across the province,"
Bradley said. "In the last two years we have added $60 million
to our department budget. We are meeting our commitment to spend
$2.5 billion improving our roads and highways by 2007."
