PRINCE ALBERT REDA RECEIVES REDA ENHANCEMENT FUNDING

Released on February 15, 1999

Economic and Co-operative Development Minister Janice MacKinnon today

announced support of $1,500 to the Prince Albert Regional Economic

Development Authority (REDA) to help it promote Prince Albert and

area's 1999 Supplier Symposium. This event is an integral part of the

city's economic development strategy of creating growth in Prince

Albert and area by assisting local expansion.

"REDAs have played an important role in community economic development

in Saskatchewan, helping us build a business climate that encourages

growth and job creation at both the local and provincial levels,"

MacKinnon said.

"This initiative by the Prince Albert REDA will provide an opportunity

for companies and government organizations to source new suppliers

and, at the same time, provide a forum for local businesses to

showcase their products and services."

Funding comes from the REDA Enhancement Fund which assists REDAs to

further develop services for small business, establish one-stop

business service centres, and initiate programs that promote economic

expansion. This fund is part of an additional $1.95 million directed

toward regional economic development in the 1998-99 budget.

"The financial assistance that REDAs provide local businesses and

organizations is invaluable," said Gerry Stroshein, Chairperson

of the Prince Albert REDA. "It provides them the opportunity to

host events, like the Supplier Symposium, where they gain

first-hand knowledge and establish future business contacts."

REDAs have assisted in community business projects that range

from youth employment initiatives, to tourism-related projects,

to feasibility studies and recreation facilities. One of the

Prince Albert REDA's recent successes is its regional business

directory, a marketing tool that lists more than 400 businesses

from all communities surrounding Prince Albert.

"The REDA Enhancement Fund is one way we are living up to our

commitment to support community economic development and to work

with communities to provide jobs for Saskatchewan people,"

MacKinnon said.
