In honour of Heritage Day, Municipal Affairs, Culture and Housing
Minister Carol Teichrob today announced the designation of the former
Regina Telephone Exchange as Provincial Heritage Property.
"The province recognizes the significance of heritage as an integral
aspect of our identity and by designating buildings as heritage
properties celebrates the preservation of our past," Teichrob said.
The designation of the former Regina Telephone Exchange building at
1870 Lorne Street, which is currently owned by Sask Sport Inc.,
commemorates the development of telephone service in Saskatchewan.
The building was designed by the architectural firm of Storey and Van
Egmond and is the oldest known surviving Saskatchewan Government
Telephones' building. Built to replace an earlier Exchange destroyed
in the Regina Cyclone of 1912, it housed one of the first automatic
dial switching stations in Saskatchewan. Its prominent location and
elaborate design, emulating some of the classical details of the
Legislative Building, reflect the pride in the communications system
felt by the people of Saskatchewan.
Heritage Day is observed throughout Canada on the third Monday of
February as an occasion to celebrate Canada's unique identity and
history. In Saskatchewan, it serves to focus attention on the
important role our heritage resources play in providing a
perspective on human and natural history.
