REGIONAL ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY (REDA) WEEK RECOGNIZED FEBRUARY 14 TO 20

Released on February 12, 1999

Economic and Co-operative Development Minister Janice MacKinnon today

proclaimed February 14 to 20 as Regional Economic Development

Authority (REDA) Week in Saskatchewan. This week celebrates the

important work done by REDAs of developing and promoting their local

economies.

"Since the REDA initiative was first launched in 1993, REDAs have been

actively working to create opportunities for growth and jobs in the

communities and regions they serve," MacKinnon said.

"They are models of grassroots' economic development, bringing

together businesses, co-operatives, communities, First Nations and

local governments to pool their organizational, professional and

financial resources."

Saskatchewan has 27 REDAs encouraging investment and job creation on a

regional basis. Their community and economic development projects

range from youth employment initiatives, to tourism-related projects,

to feasibility studies and recreation facilities.

MacKinnon noted that the first-ever REDA Week coincides with the

second annual REDA Conference taking place February 18 and 19 in

Saskatoon. Representatives from all 27 REDAs will gather to share

resources and ideas and discuss innovative methods to promote economic

growth.

Under the REDA program, the government provides each REDA with

cost-shared startup funding of up to $25,000, along with annual

50 per cent shared operating funding, to a maximum of $60,000 per

year. The government also allocated an additional $1.95 million

to the program in the last provincial budget to cover new

training activities and resources and a REDA enhancement fund.

"REDA Week is a recognition of organizations that work to build

our economy and create jobs through community-driven

development," MacKinnon said. "Our government is committed to

working with these dynamic partners to build a new Saskatchewan

that is confident, outward-looking and diversified."
