Released on April 29, 1999
Highways and Transportation Minister Judy Bradley today announced theawarding of three important highway contracts that will further
advance twinning on Saskatchewan's major highways this summer.
"This year we increased our department budget to $234 million,"
Bradley said. "With that funding we are committed to not only
improving our existing highway system but to continue twinning our
major transportation corridors."
Two paving contracts were recently awarded to complete 27 km of
twinning on Highway 1 west of Gull Lake that began last year.
Morsky Construction Ltd. of Regina, as the lowest of four bidders, was
awarded a $2.9 million paving contract on the west bound lanes from
west of Gull Lake. The 12.9 km paving project is expected to begin at
the end of April and be completed by the end of August 1999. An
estimated 33 jobs will be used on the project.
Anderson Rental and Paving Ltd. of Saskatoon was awarded the second
paving contract as the lowest of six bidders for a 14.6 km paving
project on the west-bound lanes near Gull Lake. The $3.9 million
project cost will use an estimated 60 jobs in completion. The paving
project is expected to start in mid-June and be completed by the end
of August.
"These paving projects complete the twinning we started last year
on Highway 1 west. It was here that we had our greatest safety
concerns due to limited passing opportunities so we are pleased
that weather permitting we will open these lanes to the public
this fall."
Twinning will also continue on Highway 16 with a 10.6 km grading
project beginning on Highway 16 northwest of Lashburn to
southeast of Marshall.
"This $2 million grading project is expected to start in mid-May
and be complete by the end of July 1999. An estimated 33 jobs
will be used to complete the grading."
North American Rock and Dirt Inc. was awarded the contract for
grading as the lowest of nine bidders. The project will begin on
the west bound lanes of Highway 16 from 0.9 km northwest of
Lashburn to 0.5 km southeast of Marshall for a total distance of
10.6 km.
"We are spending almost $9 million on these three twinning
projects," Bradley said. "These projects demonstrate our
financial commitment and our commitment to improving the safety
and comfort of drivers on our highway system."
