ESTEVAN SCHOOL PROJECTS PROCEEDING

Released on April 15, 1999

Education Minister Clay Serby today announced funding for planning and

design work on two Estevan school projects and participated in a sod-turning ceremony at a third school.

"Four years ago, the government committed to working with our partners

to ensure Estevan and area students have safe, modern, appropriately

equipped schools," Serby said. "Today, we are moving ahead with phase

three of our plan to improve learning facilities with a sod-turning

ceremony for Westview Public School. We are also announcing $100,000

in funding for the Estevan Public and Rural School Divisions so they

can investigate and design a joint school to serve students from

Scotsburn School, and some students from the Hillside attendance area.

As well, $100,000 is being committed for planning and design work at

St. Mary's Catholic School to build a new gymnasium and renovate other

facilities."

Planning and design work approved in 1998 is now complete for Westview

School. Saskatchewan Education is contributing $1.7 million to

renovate and build an addition at the school. Construction of the

other projects is expected to begin next year.

The need to upgrade Elementary School facilities in Estevan was

identified in a 1993 study that recommended closing the Estevan

Junior High School due to its poor condition. An integrated plan

for the efficient use of facilities in the Estevan Public, Roman

Catholic Separate, Rural, and Comprehensive School Divisions was

then developed. Once all projects are completed, major

renovations or additions will have taken place in four public

schools and one separate school. One school serving rural

children will be renovated or replaced in partnership with one

urban school.

Renovations in the Estevan Comprehensive School to accommodate

the Southeast Regional College were also part of the integrated

educational facilities plan for Estevan. These renovations were

completed in 1998.

This year's provincial capital budget for school upgrading

projects, renovations and new school construction is $24 million.

Work will occur at approximately 100 schools in Saskatchewan.
