SHARED FACILITY TO BENEFIT WEYBURN AREA LEARNERS

Released on April 12, 1999

Weyburn and area learners will soon benefit from an improved location,

shared facilities and equipment. Post-Secondary Education and Skills

Training Minister Maynard Sonntag, along with Minister of Education

Clay Serby, today announced approval of funding for a joint-use

facility that will serve a total of approximately 2,500 students, both

post-secondary and those at Weyburn Comprehensive High School.

"Thanks to the co-operation and commitment of our education and

training partners in the Weyburn School Division, we are developing a

cost-effective, shared education and training facility for Southeast

Regional College at the Weyburn Comprehensive High School," Sonntag

said. "This is good news for taxpayers, students, job seekers and

employers in the Weyburn area. The provincial budget's significant

investment in our education and training system is an investment in

students and our future."

"I congratulate all of the people who worked so hard to benefit high

school and regional college students through the creation of this

innovative educational facility," Serby said. "Both partners will

save money by sharing the operating and maintenance costs of this

facility. This money can be redirected to support instructors,

teachers and students. An added bonus is the opportunity for high

school students to develop another connection to the post-secondary

education and training system."

The project will incorporate Southeast Regional College into

1,164 square metres of existing space in the older east wing of

the high school. Minor renovations to the high school will be

necessary so the school can function in the reduced space. A new

computer lab and equipment will be added and shared with the

college. The cost of renovations is expected to be about

$600,000.

Renovations will be made during the summer and will be completed

in time for the Regional College to hold classes in its new

location this fall.
