Agriculture and Food Minister Eric Upshall said today that theprovince is increasing funding for the Green Certificate Program to
improve program delivery to farm managers and expand its use as a high
school course.
Since its introduction in Saskatchewan in 1995, the program has issued
81 certificates. There are currently 187 trainees enrolled in the
program. The program offers Certificates of Achievement, which
identify that the individual has mastered the practical skills
necessary for farm operation. Individuals who successfully complete
the training improve their employment prospects. The certificate is
recognized in Saskatchewan and Alberta.
"Skilled and motivated employees are essential for any business to be
successful," Upshall said. "The Green Certificate Program is an
on-farm training program that provides farm managers with a structured
curriculum to follow in improving staff training. Producers involved
in the program can train the workforce they need on their farm.
Improved technical skills and knowledge of staff translates into
production efficiencies and profits."
Upshall said a curriculum has also been developed and approved
for use in high schools. Some high schools are already offering
their students the opportunity to receive school credits for
taking the Green Certificate training. Students who take the
training have a head start if they decide to take further
education at a technical institute or university.
Kelvington High School has been using the program as the basis
for a locally developed course since 1997. In 1998-99, schools
at Gull Lake, Hazlet and Mayfair are field-testing the program as
the basis for a locally developed course for use as part of the
Practical and Applied Arts Curriculum. Several schools have
given a special project credit to trainees who have used the
program.
Upshall said he is pleased to see the use of the Green
Certificate Program in schools as it serves to improve
agricultural awareness within the educational system.
"The Green Certificate Program and the additional funding in this
year's budget are examples of the government's commitment to the
development and delivery of educational and training
opportunities to meet the needs of the agriculture and food
industry," Upshall said.
