Released on September 21, 1998
Harvest progress continued last week and stands at 99 per centcomplete, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture and Food's weekly crop
report.
Combining of all crops, with the exception of flax, sunflowers and
canary seed, is at least 98 per cent complete. All crop districts,
with the exception of crop district one in southeast Saskatchewan, are
at least 98 per cent complete.
Rain in many areas of the province at the end of the week was
welcomed. Farmers who were holding off on their fall work because of
the dry conditions will now be able to continue fall tillage and
spraying operations. More fertilizer will probably be applied and
more fall crops seeded.
With only an additional one per cent of the spring wheat harvested
over the past seven days, the quality estimate remains basically the
same with 73 per cent of the crop expected to grade No. 1 Canada
Western (CW), 22 per cent 2 CW, four per cent 3 CW and one per cent
Canada Feed. These estimates may decline slightly because the
unharvested crops may suffer some quality damage from the rain.
Crop damage reported during the week was mainly from wind and drought. Some flooding damage was reported in the southeast and some frost damage was reported in north central areas. Grasshopper and wheat midge damage was also reported.
The Saskatchewan Crop Insurance Corporation reminds customers to
file post-harvest claims immediately after completing harvest.
If yields and/or quality are lower than your production
guarantee, you may be in a claim position. Call your

This is the last regular crop report for the 1998 season. The
final report will be released on October 15, 1998.
