SASKTEL CONTINUES SERVICES COMMITMENT TO SWIFT CURRENT AND AREA

Released on September 9, 1998

Deputy Premier and Crown Investments Corporation Minister Dwain

Lingenfelter today announced about $4.5 million will be invested in

SaskTel network improvements in Swift Current and the surrounding

area.

"This investment means SaskTel will continue to provide our customers

in and around Swift Current with a reliable, secure, leading-edge,

all-digital network," said Lingenfelter. "SaskTel is committed to

connecting Saskatchewan people to a world-class communications system

and to ensure our customers can continue to access advanced services

such as the Internet, wireless, SmartTouch features like Call Display

and multimedia systems."

"Three of the projects will install a total of 191 km of fiber optic

cable and electronics between Gull Lake, Shaunavon, Maple Creek,

Tompkins, Piapot, Morse, Waldeck, Rush Lake and Herbert," said Kelvin

Shepherd, Chief Technology Officer of SaskTel. "These projects are

scheduled for completion by December, and will improve service by

increasing capacity, quality and reliability of the telephone and data

networks."

On May 4, SaskTel announced that it will be investing $100 million in

provincial network improvements in about 60 communities in 1998.

"As SaskTel moves toward a fully competitive market, this

investment means Swift Current and all Saskatchewan residents

will continue to benefit from a network that has served them and

their telecommunications company extremely well over the last 90

years and will do so into the next century," said Lingenfelter.

SaskTel is the leading full service communications company in

Saskatchewan, providing voice, data, Internet, text and messaging

services over a fiber optic-based, fully digital network, as well

as cellular, paging and FleetNet 800 service through its SaskTel

Mobility division.
