REDAS TO RECEIVE ONE MILLION DOLLARS IN ADDITIONAL FUNDING

Released on October 26, 1998

Economic and Co-operative Development Minister Janice MacKinnon today

announced establishment of the $1,000,000 Regional Economic

Development Authority (REDA) Enhancement Fund. The money will be used

to help fund various REDA projects and costs.

Eligible projects include local tourism infrastructure, development of

regional enterprise centres, computers and software, feasibility

studies and resource materials.

"REDAs have been very successful in generating economic growth and

jobs in Saskatchewan communities," MacKinnon said. "The REDA

Enhancement Fund will assist them to further develop services for

small business, establish one-stop business service centres, and

initiate programs that promote economic expansion."

Under the program, each of the province's REDAs will be eligible for

up to $50,000 in funding over and above the annual operational money

each receives under the REDA initiative. Project funding will be

approved on a first-come, first-served basis, with a program maximum

of $1,000,000 for the 1998-99 fiscal year.

"We are living up to our commitment to enhance community economic

development and to work with communities to provide jobs for

Saskatchewan people," MacKinnon said.

The REDA Enhancement Fund is part of an additional $1.95 million

directed toward regional economic development that was announced

in the 1998-99 budget.

The province's REDAs have assisted in community and economic

development projects that range from youth employment

initiatives, to tourism-related projects, to feasibility studies

and recreation facilities.
