Environment and Resource Management Minister Lorne Scott announcedtoday that the summer season in the provincial parks system was
extremely successful.
"I'm very pleased with the outcome of the summer parks season," Scott
said. "Overall visits to Saskatchewan provincial parks have increased
to 2.6 million from 2.3 million; this is a 13 per cent increase over
the 1997 season. More than 15 per cent of these visitors are from
outside of Saskatchewan, adding to the economic activity in the
province."
Although the warm, sunny weather played a major role in contributing
to the excellent summer season and boosting visitation statistics from
previous years, a number of initiatives also helped.
"Parks staff are placing a stronger emphasis on an overall provincial
marketing plan and partnerships program and providing quality customer
service," Scott said. "Parks staff have also been marketing their
individual parks and offering park users a wider variety of special
events. They are also playing a more active role in developing
promotional partnerships with commercial lessees.
"I'm very pleased with our new approach in attracting more people to
the parks. All the initiatives combined have contributed to this
summer's success."
Many park visitors have also enjoyed some of the new and improved
park facilities throughout the parks system. The government is
committed to investing in the parks system and has funded the
parks capital budget for $2.5 million each year for the past two
years. The funding provided this year is part of a 10-year parks
revitalization plan to renew basic park facilities. Some
projects included service center upgrades at Duck Mountain,
Greenwater Lake and Pike Lake provincial parks, a new service
center at Cypress Hills Provincial Park, fully serviced campsites
at Cypress Hills and Meadow Lake provincial parks, campground
electrification at many parks, new maintenance buildings at Lac
La Ronge and Moose Mountain provincial parks, as well as numerous
upgrades throughout the parks system.
A number of ongoing projects now underway include replacing the
Pike Lake office and maintenance yard, upgrading the sewage
system at Cypress Hills Provincial Park and replacing wood picnic
tables with steel picnic tables.
