Natural Resources Minister Ralph Goodale and Saskatchewan MunicipalAffairs, Culture and Housing Minister Carol Teichrob today announced
$100,000 in funding for Regina's Globe Theatre under the
Canada-Saskatchewan Infrastructure Works Program.
The Infrastructure Works funding is directed toward the upgrade and
installation of an air exchange and cooling system, which is part of a
$1 million refurbishment being undertaken by the Globe Theatre that
includes renovating the theatre interior, seating, flooring, railings,
heating system and production equipment.
"The Government of Canada is pleased to support the renovations of
Regina's unique and historic Globe Theatre," said Minister Goodale, on
behalf of Ron J. Duhamel, Secretary of State for Western Economic
Diversification and minister responsible for implementation of the
infrastructure program in Western Canada. "The theatre has a fairly
significant impact on the local economy and funding will ensure the
theatre is maintained as a modern, vibrant facility."
"This infrastructure funding for the Regina Globe Theatre will
contribute toward the refurbishment of theatre facilities," said
Teichrob, minister responsible for the Canada-Saskatchewan
Infrastructure Works Agreement. "For more than 30 years, the Globe
Theatre has played an important leadership role in the performing arts
of Saskatchewan and has made a significant contribution to the
cultural life of our communities."
Globe Theatre Artistic Director Ruth Smillie said, "The
tremendous success of the Imagine This!' Capital Campaign thus
far can be attributed to the support of all sectors of the
community. We are very grateful to the federal and provincial
governments for their generous contribution through the
Canada-Saskatchewan Infrastructure Works Program."
The original Canada-Saskatchewan Infrastructure Works Program,
signed in January 1994, is estimated to have created more than
6,000 short-term jobs, while at the same time making essential
improvements to infrastructure throughout the province worth more
than $360 million.
Federal funding for this initiative was provided for in the
February 1998 budget and is therefore built into the existing
fiscal framework. This project underlines the commitment of both
governments to establish spending priorities that will best serve
the people of Saskatchewan through efficient use of their tax
dollars.
