PREMIER APPOINTS COUNCIL FOR MILLENNIUM AND CENTENNIAL ACTIVITIES

Released on May 28, 1998

Premier Roy Romanow today announced the appointment of a Citizens'

Advisory Council on Anniversaries. The mandate of the Council is to

provide vision, direction and leadership and make policy

recommendations to the government. The Council will consider

initiatives for Saskatchewan's role in the millennium and for the

province's centennial in 2005.

The Citizens' Advisory Council will seek public input for programs and

projects relating to these two major milestones in the province's

history.

"The province's celebrations belong to the people of Saskatchewan and

I encourage all citizens to submit their ideas for projects and

initiatives," Romanow said.

The Council is comprised of 19 volunteers from around the province.

"The Council members are exemplary individuals from all walks of

life," Provincial Secretary Ned Shillington said. "They bring a wide

range of experiences in community development and voluntarism. We

will be looking to them for leadership. I thank them in advance for

contributing their time to this important process."

Saskatchewan will mark its 100th anniversary as a province of

Canada in 2005. In the past, Saskatchewan residents have

celebrated the province's 90th, 75th and 50th Anniversaries. The

success of those anniversaries is a result of communities

focussing on three elements: commemorating their past,

celebrating the anniversary year and leaving a legacy for the

future. These same values will be applied in the planning and

implementation of all initiatives for the upcoming millennium and

centennial.

"A provincial celebration of the magnitude of a 100th anniversary

requires the co-ordinated effort of all levels of government,

businesses, community service groups and most importantly, the

people of the province," Romanow said. "This is a celebration of

and for all people in the province. It is an opportunity to not

only showcase our province and our people, but also to portray

our province's motto From Many Peoples Strength.

"This Council will be instrumental in ensuring the success of the

anniversaries program through the participation of all sectors in

Saskatchewan."

An Anniversaries Secretariat in the Department of Provincial

Secretary has been established to provide support to the

Anniversaries Council and to co-ordinate the activities of

government. Individuals can contact the Citizens' Advisory

Council and the Secretariat by phoning the toll-free number
