SASKTEL COMMITS $100 MILLION TO NETWORK IMPROVEMENTS IN 1998

Released on May 5, 1998

Deputy Premier and Crown Investments Corporation Minister Dwain

Lingenfelter today announced SaskTel is continuing its commitment to

connect Saskatchewan people to a world-class communications system for

its customers by investing $100 million in provincial network

improvements in about 60 communities in 1998.

"SaskTel must invest in the core of its business - the existing

network," Lingenfelter said. "This investment means SaskTel will

continue to provide its customers with a reliable, secure,

state-of-the-art network. In addition, this investment ensures that

customers can enjoy access to advanced services such as the Internet,

wireless, SmartTouch features like Call Display and multimedia

systems."

Kelvin Shepherd, Chief Technology Officer of SaskTel said, "The

modernization of fibre optic cable and switching equipment which

connects Saskatchewan's communities will continue through the Core

Network Evolution program, which is part of this year's investment."

Lingenfelter added, "Our ongoing financial commitment to Saskatchewan

has resulted in a province-wide, leading-edge, all-digital network

that joins together Saskatchewan's 12 cities, 670 smaller communities

and nearly 60,000 farms. This investment means Saskatchewan residents

will continue to benefit from a network that has served them - and

their telecommunications company - extremely well over the last 90

years, and will do so into the next century."

SaskTel is the leading full service communications company in

Saskatchewan, providing voice, data, Internet, text and Messaging

services over a fibre optic based, fully digital network, as well

as cellular, paging and FleetNet 800 service through its SaskTel

Mobility division.
