Premier Roy Romanow will address the annual meeting of the BusinessCouncil on National Issues (BCNI) in Toronto, Wednesday, April 1.
He will speak to business leaders about prospects for building
national unity, in his role as chair of the Annual Premiers'
Conference.
"I think we can allow ourselves a measure of cautious optimism that
the case for Canada is going to be put vigorously," Romanow said.
"The separatists in Quebec aren't the only team on the ice anymore.
Their uninterrupted monologue in this debate is coming to an end.
"My job as a provincial premier outside of Quebec is to support the
voices ever more convincingly making the case for Canada.
"I can do so by doing what I can to show that Canada works and can be
made to work better in everyone's interests -- in the interests of the
people of Saskatchewan; the people of Quebec; of all Canadians."
Romanow will outline his view on how to achieve that goal in his
speech tomorrow.
Jean Charest, former leader of the federal Progressive Conservative
Party and currently a candidate for the leadership of the Quebec
Liberal Party, is addressing the BCNI Tuesday evening.
While in Toronto, Romanow will also meet with investment bankers
to discuss the recent provincial budget and investment
opportunities in Saskatchewan.
"We have achieved our fifth straight balanced budget," Romanow
said. "We're reducing our debt. We've reduced income taxes, as
part of our plan to reduce the tax burden sustainably. We've
made some important new investments in our highways
infrastructure, education and training system, research and
development, health care, and social programs.
"Our province has achieved a virtuous circle' of declining debt,
lower taxes and targeted investments -- and that adds up to an
excellent climate for investment, which I want to describe and
promote."
