NEW SCHOOL CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS ANNOUNCED FOR LLOYDMINSTER AREA

Released on March 23, 1998

Education Minister Pat Atkinson today announced three school

construction projects for the Lloydminster area. The minister was in

the city to follow up on the Government of Saskatchewan's new

Provincial Budget.

"Today's announcement demonstrates we are committed to securing the

future of the province by investing, together with our partners, in

the public education of Saskatchewan's children and youth," Atkinson

said.

"Over the past few years the vibrant community of Lloydminster has

experienced economic growth and a corresponding enrolment growth in

both school systems. The school divisions have asked the Department

to assess their facility requirements and the proposals have been

reviewed."

The three new projects given the go ahead by the Saskatchewan

Provincial Government are:

a new public elementary school to replace the existing Neville

Goss Elementary School. Construction on this project is to begin

in 1998.

a new gymnasium, additional classrooms, science and music areas

for Father Gorman Elementary School in the Lloydminster Roman

Catholic School Division. Construction of the addition is to

begin in 1998.

approval-in-principle for the planning and design of a new

High School for the Lloydminster Roman Catholic Separate

School Division. Construction is to begin in 1999.

"This is a great day for students, teachers, parents and the

citizens of Lloydminster," Atkinson said. "Our Government has

made the commitment to provide Lloydminster students with a safe

and well-equipped learning environment. Today's announcement

outlines a total financial commitment of approximately $6.5

million from the Province of Saskatchewan to these capital

projects over the next three years."

The Government of Alberta and the school divisions will also be

providing capital funds for these projects.

Building the new Roman Catholic Separate High School, and the

public elementary school addresses long-standing enrolment

pressures on the two school systems. Renovations to Father

Gorman Elementary School provide for redesigned program space now

lacking in this school. In 1997 the gymnasium in Father Gorman

School was converted to classrooms.

This year's total capital budget for new school construction and

renovation is $24 million, an increase of $7.3 million over last

year's capital budget. A number of major projects and more than

100 school improvement projects will also be approved over the

next year in communities across the province."
