Post-Secondary Education and Skills Training Minister Joanne Croffordannounced today that the Saskatchewan Student Loans Program will be
improved by reallocating $22 million to establish a Saskatchewan
Student Bursary Program for students with high need, increased
financial assistance for students with dependants, and tax changes.
"We are addressing the needs of students and investing in our young
people," Crofford said. "More students will get a higher level of
assistance with considerably less debt.
"The new provincial bursary program and increased assistance levels
will allow students with dependents to return to school. Students
with dependents will no longer have to borrow more than other students
to provide for their children while attending a post-secondary
institution."
Students may be eligible for the maximum bursary of $3,230 over a
regular school term. As well, students with dependants may be
eligible for a bursary up to $4,250. The amounts will vary depending
on financial need and on the length of the study period.
"Saskatchewan is also implementing tax changes to benefit
students in accordance with the measures announced in the recent
federal budget," Crofford said. "As a result, Saskatchewan
students will save $5 million in provincial income tax."
An additional $48 million is devoted to post-secondary education
and skills training in this year's provincial budget, with a
total investment of $434 million.
