BUDGET INVESTS IN SAFE COMMUNITIES

Released on March 19, 1998

Justice Minister John Nilson said today that a 5.9 per cent increased

investment in Justice will help keep our communities safe.

"These investments will hold offenders to strict account for their

crimes and deal clearly and directly with youth crime," Nilson said.

"The new investments will also provide communities with resources to

prevent crime and better meet the needs of crime victims."

The additional investments in Justice include:

Increased investments in the RCMP to maintain policing in rural

Saskatchewan;

Assistance to police and prosecutors to deal with chronic and

repeat young offenders;

Measures to help police prevent criminal gangs from infiltrating

further into Saskatchewan, tackle the drug trade, and crack down on

crimes such as child pornography, Internet crime and money

laundering; and

Increasing the number of prosecutors to ensure that trials proceed

as quickly as possible.

"The vast majority of Saskatchewan people are honest and law abiding,"

Nilson said. "This investment in Justice will help protect them from

the small minority who are not."
