BUDGET INVESTS IN HOUSING

Released on March 19, 1998

Municipal Government Minister Carol Teichrob today announced that the

provincial budget makes a significant investment in housing programs

designed to help make adequate and affordable housing accessible to

Saskatchewan residents.

"We are increasing our investment in housing by about $9 million per

year," Teichrob said. "Adequate and affordable housing can help

improve people's health, safety and ability to become independent."

Four programs account for the increased investment in housing.

The Neighbourhood Home Ownership Program assists low income families

to acquire and modify existing housing in inner city neighbourhoods.

The program helps meet the demand for secure, affordable low income

housing while increasing neighbourhood stability.

The Homes Now Program provides for the renovation of existing rental

accommodation and its conversion to social housing in mature areas of

larger centres.

The Assisted Living Program will build common amenity areas, co-ordination of meal and home-making services and make modifications to

increase the accessibility and safety of senior's housing units.

The Community Home Incentive Program will help growing rural

communities provide housing for low and moderate income

individuals and families.

"These programs will help to ensure that Saskatchewan people can

get access to one of our basic essentials - a roof over their

head," Teichrob said. "Our investment in housing will also help

seniors and the disabled to live independently."
