Agriculture and Food Minister Eric Upshall announced that the provinceis increasing investment in agricultural research and development to
spur economic development and jobs.
"We are investing an additional $1.9 million for research and
technology adoption, which is vital to diversifying and adding value
to Saskatchewan products," Upshall said.
Of this, the Agriculture Development Fund is receiving $900,000 to
fund research and development projects. The other $1 million goes to
agriculture research to develop partnerships, application and
demonstration of research.
"This 15 per cent funding increase will help Saskatchewan develop new
products and create new jobs."
To assist the future growth and development of the hog industry,
$3-million is being invested in the expansion and development of the
Prairie Swine Centre, along with a three-year commitment of $300,000
per year to the Centre. This investment will allow the Prairie Swine
Centre to expand its environmental research activity, animal
well-being, product quality and production efficiency. The hog
industry is expected to create up to 6,000 jobs in the next few years.
"Research on nutrition conducted at the Prairie Swine Centre over
the last four years has identified a potential net income
increase of $11 per pig for producers, a potential saving to
producers of $11 million annually," Upshall said.
The Government of Saskatchewan continues its commitment to
reducing input costs for farmers through strategic targeting of
resources. Today's budget announcements build on recent
initiatives that focus on reducing input costs such as the more
than 30 per cent reduction in crop insurance premiums over the
past two years; the E&H tax exemption program for purchases of
farm equipment, agricultural repairs, fertilizer, pesticides and
seed purchases; and the joint federal-provincial-territorial
input costs study examining pricing practices in the fertilizer,
pesticide and energy industries.
