ADDITIONAL TRAINING DOLLARS GOOD INVESTMENT

Released on March 19, 1998

Post-Secondary Education and Skills Training Minister Joanne Crofford

announced a $9.4 million boost for the Saskatchewan Training Strategy

in today's provincial budget, bringing the total investment in

training to $135.6 million.

The increased investment creates 23,000 training opportunities next

year - up 5,000 since last year's launch of the Saskatchewan Training

Strategy.

"More jobs are available in Saskatchewan and we are training people

for those jobs," Crofford said. "This is great news for everyone -

employers and learners."

Approximately $3.9 million of the increased investment will be

utilized to provide skills training to meet the emerging needs in the

labour market. This includes Apprenticeship, JobStart/Future Skills

retraining and industry response training and high demand programs at

SIAST.

An additional $2.6 million will be provided for community-based

training, family literacy, career and employment services.

An additional $2.9 million will be available to the Provincial

Training Allowance that was introduced last year as part of

Social Assistance Redesign. This income support program will

allow low income students to access the training they need to

become independent.

"At the same time we are increasing training opportunities, we

are improving provincial student financial assistance and

introducing a new provincial bursary program targeted at high

need students."

In total, the government has committed $434 million to

post-secondary education and skills training, an increase of

$48 million over last year's budget.
