CASINO FUNDS TO SUPPORT HIGH RISK CHILDREN AND WOMEN AND CHILDREN PROJECTS

Released on March 11, 1998

Last Mountain-Touchwood MLA Dale Flavel, on behalf of Municipal

Government Minister Carol Teichrob, today announced that two projects

in Last Mountain-Touchwood have received $40,000 of casino profits

through the Associated Entities Fund.

The Cupar School Division will receive $10,000 for a Healthy Life

Style Choices program and the Wichihik Iskwewak Safe House will

receive $30,000 for an Empowerment of Women and Children program.

"The province established the Associated Entities Fund to distribute a

portion of casino profits for the benefit of Saskatchewan people,"

Flavel said. "Since the beginning of 1997 more than $1 million in

casino profits have been distributed, throughout Saskatchewan, for

programs that support children, youth and families - more than $47,000

for the Last Mountain-Touchwood constituency."

The healthy lifestyle program will create a preventative education

program designed to address the needs of high risk students. The goal

is to decrease the incidence of unplanned teen pregnancy and improve

the coping ability of young parents.

The Wichihik Iskwewak Safe House (WISH) will use the grant for

shelter and outreach clients and staff to establishment

programming aimed at breaking the barriers to become

self-sufficient. The safe house is part of the Touchwood File

Hills Qu'Appelle Tribal Council.

The program will be conducted on a daily basis and will include

assertive communication, self-esteem, GED upgrading, stopping the

abuse cycle, stopping drug and alcohol abuse, parenting skills,

employment skill and training, healing the past and money

management and budgeting.

The Associated Entities Fund receives a portion of the profits

from Casino Regina; the Gold Eagle Casino, North Battleford; the

Northern Lights Casino, Prince Albert; and the Painted Hand

Casino, Yorkton.

Flavel said the Associated Entities Fund provides grants to

community organizations for programs and services that support

children, youth and families.
