Economic and Co-operative Development Minister Janice MacKinnon todayhelped officially open the Southeast Centre for Business Development
in Weyburn. Centre partners are the South East Regional Economic
Development Authority, the Sunrise Community Futures Development
Corporation and the Weyburn Chamber of Commerce.
The centre brings together local, regional, provincial and federal
organizations under one roof to provide a wide range of business
development services to south east businesses and co-operatives.
"Through this innovative partnership, these organizations will be able
to provide a better level of service to people in the south east,"
MacKinnon said. "This new centre will make a significant contribution
to creating jobs and promoting economic growth in this region."
The minister said the co-location is an important step for the South
East REDA. The South East REDA was incorporated in September of 1995
and is run by a volunteer board of directors. It serves an area that
contains 15 R.Ms. and numerous smaller centres.
Catherine Kerr, manager of the South East REDA, said the move will
save on administrative costs but more importantly provide a stronger
delivery of services.
"By moving into the same building with the other economic
agencies we will be better able to serve the needs of the area,"
Kerr said. "This will make things convenient for entrepreneurs
when they need more than one agency's support. It will truly be
a teamwork concept at the new location."
This is the fourth such co-location of economic development
agencies in Saskatchewan. The other three serve the Prince
Albert, Yorkton and Swift Current areas. MacKinnon said the
government encourages such co-locations as part of a commitment
to co-ordinated and streamlined services.
"These partnerships among eocnomic development agencies help
advance a common goal, that of developing a region's economy,"
MacKinnon said. "The winners from the combined effort here are
the people and the businesses of southeast Saskatchewan."
The South East REDA is part of a network of grassroots regional
authorities which encourage investment and job creation. The
government provides cost-shared start-up and operational funding
to each REDA.
