Economic and Co-operative Development Minister Janice MacKinnon andCypress Hills Regional Economic Development Authority (REDA) Chairman
Norm Lavoy today officially launched the Cypress Hills REDA on the
Nekaneet First Nation, south of Maple Creek.
"We are extremely pleased the Cypress Hills REDA is now a part of the
provincial REDA network," MacKinnon said. "REDAs play a key role in
community economic development in this province by helping to promote
growth and create jobs at the local level."
Members of the Cypress Hills REDA include the towns of Maple Creek,
Gull Lake, Eastend and Shaunavon and the Nekaneet First Nation.
"This is indeed a giant step forward in the field of regional economic
development in this area," said Chairman Norm Lavoy. "The formation
of the Cypress Hills REDA will provide the citizens of the southwest
the opportunity to have individuals, businesses, organizations,
municipalities and the provincial government work together to benefit
the economic well-being of the region."
"The establishment of Saskatchewan's 27th REDA further strengthens our
network of Regional Economic Development Authorities across the
province," MacKinnon said. "The provincial government will continue
to work in partnership with REDAs to ensure all communities in
Saskatchewan develop their economic potential and create jobs for
people."
REDAs allow municipal governments, community organizations, private
businesses, co-operatives and First Nations to work together to
encourage investment and job creation in the region.
Under the REDA program, the province provides each REDA with a
cost-shared startup fund of up to $25,000, along with annual
50 per cent shared operating funding to a maximum of $60,000
per year.
"REDAs play a crucial role in community economic development in
Saskatchewan, driving growth and job creation at the local
level," MacKinnon said. "In this year's budget we reaffirmed our
strong commitment to Regional Economic Development Authorities by
increasing our investment by almost $2 million."
